Rita Comer Vernon, 58, passed away on April 14, 2026. Born March 30, 1968, Rita was raised in Rockingham County. She lived in Reidsville, North Carolina, where her days were marked by devotion to her family, consideration for others, and a loyalty that never wavered.
Rita graduated from Rockingham county high school in 1986 and went on to study Criminal Justice after high school.
Her undeniable work ethic was instilled at an early age. She began working with her family at Short Sugars Barbeque. These early experiences led her to later work at Family Diner, where she made lifelong memories and friendships with customers and co-workers. Those years of connection and care prepared her for the next 20 years as a United State Postal Service Employee serving her community every day with a smile.
For over 31 years, Rita was married to the love of her life, Chris. Together they built a family rooted in commitment and passion, welcoming two children, Elijah and Sydni—two of her greatest joys and proudest blessings. Her favorite achievement in life was being their mommy.
Rita found happiness in the things that made life feel warm and familiar: watching crime documentaries, reliving the 1970’s, and flipping through vintage Sears catalogues. She loved going to concerts and would always have tickets to see Paul McCartney or Elton John. She passionately treasured time spent with her family especially during her favorite Holidays of Easter and Christmas. Family gatherings were made richer by her cooking—like the deviled eggs made specifically for her niece. Rita always felt compelled to give to others who were less fortunate with Christmas shopping that lasted all year long and always included Angel Tree gifts for families in the local community.
Rita leaves behind her husband, children, grand cats, siblings, and nieces and nephews. As well as, countless friends and family members.
She spent the last two years battling a monstrous disease with bravery, determination, and positivity; never allowing it to define who she was.
