Robert James Hutton

at Friends Homes West. Bob was preceded by his wife of 72 years, Katherine McCroskey Hutton in 2024.

Bob was born on February 21, 1931, in Bristol, VA to Orville and Edith Hutton. After graduating from Bristol VA High School in 1948, Bob began a 38-year career in the grocery business, 30 with The Kroger Company, rising from a bag boy to a Zone Manager. After retiring from Kroger, Bob embarked on a second career in health care, working another 16 years for LeBauer and then Southeastern Heart, finally retiring in 2007.

Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was drafted in 1952 and served 2 years active service and 18 years in the Reserves, achieving the rank of Major.

On August 10, 1952, Bob married his sweetheart, Katherine Elizabeth McCroskey in Bristol, VA. They were blessed with four children and moved to Roanoke, VA in 1960 and finally to Greensboro, NC in 1974. Bob enjoyed reading, working in his yard, and traveling on tours with his wife and friends. Bob was a member of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church for 52 years and served the Lord by singing in the Choir, the Senior Choir, teaching Sunday School, serving on committees, and as a deacon.

In addition to his parents and wife, Bob is preceded in death by his sisters, Barbara Morski, Dorothy Fleenor, Judith Brice, and his beloved son, Robert James “Jim” Hutton Jr.

Bob is survived by daughters, Elizabeth Anne Hutton of Charlottesville, VA, Kathy Hutton (Conrad) of Elbert, CO, daughter in law Dana Hutton of Summerfield, NC, son David Hutton (Carrie) of New London, NC; four grandchildren, Erin Greene (Dustin), Henry Hutton (Quinnlan), Seth Hutton, Olivia Hutton, one great grandson, Jack Greene, and several nieces and nephews.

A private entombment service will be held at Westminster Gardens.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Friends Homes West and Trinity Rehab for the excellent care they provided Bob over the last few years.
