

1st Sergeant Robert L. Stewart (Retired) was born in Greensboro, NC. He died on August 11 at the age of 97 at Beacon Place Hospice care in Greensboro, NC. He was the eldest son of Robert Lee Stewart and India Gray Stewart. Bob was a long-time resident of Julian, NC a township in Guilford County, where he lived out his retirement from the U.S. Marine Corps.
At an early age Bob was affiliated with the Episcopal Church in Greensboro, NC where he and his brother Ben were altar boys. In his youth, Bob and Ben enjoyed hunting and fishing together. Bob had an endearing love for animals and had many pets during his lifetime.
Bob Joined the US. Marine Corps in 1946 at the age of 17, where he completed his high school studies. Bob served his country for 21 years and was honorably discharged in 1968. He was awarded the Vietnamese Act of Valor with Bronze for his leadership and exemplary service as he served 2 tours in Vietnam. After retiring from the military Bob worked for many years as a long-haul truck driver for McLean Trucking. After his second retirement Bob farmed vegetables, flowers and plants and sold them at the Greensboro Farmers Market. His patrons were not only customers they were his friends; he always told his customers to “take care of my plant babies”.
Bob was married to Wilmoth Rae Stewart (Wickie) on August 28, 1953 at Florida Street Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC. Bob and Wickie were married for 57 years until her death in 2010. Preceding Bob in death are his wife Wickie and his sister Eunice Stewart Belinsky. Bob is survived by his sons Robert Steven Stewart (Karen) and Robin Tracy Stewart (Mary Ann). brother Alfred Benjamin Stewart (Helen-deceased), Ben’s children Timothy Benjamin Stewart (AB) and Mitzi Stewart. Eunice’s children (Danny-deceased), Randy and Carol. grandchildren Jeffrey Carl Stewart (Ashley), Brian Minton (Meredith), Julea Minton (Lawrence), Amy Michelle Snyder (Dustin) and multiple great grandchildren.
In accordance with Bob’s last wishes his ashes will be buried at sea by the U.S. Naval-Marine Corps Program for Veterans, without a formal service.
