

Robert Wendell Vaughn, Sr., 93 years young, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, June 6th. Born in Guilford County to the late Oliver Wendell Vaughn and Mattie Ethel Spencer Vaughn on December 11, 1919, he was a lifetime resident of Greensboro.
A U.S. Army Air Corp veteran, Robert received an honorable discharge as Staff Sergeant in the 535th Bombardment Squadron. He was decorated with 7 bronze service stars, a bronze star medal and a distinguished unit badge as an airplane crew chief in the European air offensive in World War II.
Robert is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Bertha Joyce Scott Vaughn, whom he lovingly cared for at home until her death after she suffered several debilitating strokes, also an infant daughter, and infant great granddaughter, and two brothers, Fleming and Edwin Vaughn. He is survived by his sister, Edith McKnight of Canton, GA; his sons, Robert W. Vaughn Jr. of Seffner, FL (wife Sue), Calvin O. Vaughn of Greensboro (wife Joy), J .David Vaughn of Gilbert, AZ (Wife Monica), his daughter, Mary E. “Jeannie “ Dean of Greensboro (husband Larry), 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren.
Outside of his love for family, friends and church activities, Robert spent much of his life enjoying fishing, golfing, gardening and photography. He retired from Duke Power Company in 1982 after 36 faithful years of service, was a member of the Duke Energy Retiree Club (Greensboro Chapter), former member of O’Henry Lions Club (honored as Lion of the Year for 1965-1966), a 65 year member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, a member of Shining Light Baptist Church (honored as Father of the Year in 2005) and a member of American Legion Post #386.
A Memorial Service will be held at Shining Light Baptist Church on Sunday, June 9th at 2:00 p.m. Burial with full military honors will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Saturday at the Church.
