Born on December 5, 1928 in New Haven, CT, Rose was the daughter of Andrew and Amelia Casanova Buonocore and was married to the late Thomas Gallagher for 65 years. Rose dedicated her life to her family. She poured her energy, warmth, and support into raising her children and encouraging them in their endeavors. She also took immense pride in her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s accomplishments, never missing an opportunity to share their stories with anyone who would listen. Rose expressed her love through her Italian cooking. Her kitchen was the heart of the home where the aroma of homemade sauce, lasagna, pizza, and other fresh delicacies brought everyone together. She was active in the Children of Mary growing up in New Haven, served as a president of the PTA when her children were young, and was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. She was a proud and active member of the Italian American Club in Greensboro where she made many lifelong friendships and found joy in celebrating her heritage. For many years she played cards weekly with a close group of friends who were a source of joy, laughter, and camaraderie. In all she did, she will be remembered for her ingenious mind and humorous spirit.
In addition to her parents, Rose was preceded in death by her husband Thomas and her siblings, Carol Ferraro, Florence Pherson, Mary Ferraiolo, Dominic Buonocore, and Jeanne Lunney. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Carol (Douglas) Hayworth of Jamestown, Peggy (Dennis) Leyden of Greensboro, and Janet (Gregory) Phillips of East Aurora, NY; her sister, Carmel Guarino of North Haven, CT; her grandchildren, Benjamin (Helen Chandler) Leyden, Sarah (Cameron) Privott, Megan (Leonardo Merza) Hayworth, Emily (Jack Gavigan, fiancé) Hayworth, Jessica (Christopher Bonin, fiancé) Phillips, and Hannah Phillips; and her great-grandchildren, Thomas and Charlotte Leyden, Sophia Merza, and Patrick Privott.
