

Roy Lewis Callahan, age 88, of Greensboro, NC, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2025. Born and raised in Warsaw, North Carolina, Roy dedicated his life to music, education, and service to others. A gifted band director, Roy was the heart and soul of Hargrave Military Academy’s music program. In 1965, he founded the Highlanders, a beloved tradition that shaped countless lives and inspired generations. His enduring impact is commemorated by the prestigious Callahan Piper Award, a tribute to his passion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Roy was a lifelong lover of the bagpipes, finding joy in the bold, spirited music that echoed through his career and personal life. The skirl of the pipes became a signature of Roy’s legacy—one that still marches in the hearts of those he inspired.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Sondra Callahan; his children, Michael Callahan and his wife Jenni, Sharon Sweeney and her husband Jerry, Sean Callahan, and Lauren Haddix and her husband Mark. He was a proud grandfather to Stephanie Sweeney, Aimie Sweeney, Brianna Fletcher, Chelsea Callahan, Luke Haddix, Clay Haddix, and Jasmine Nicole (Niki). He leaves behind a legacy of strength, music, and family love.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Annie and Roy Callahan; his siblings Edna, Jasper, and Margie; and his granddaughter, Ashley Sweeney.
Roy will be remembered not only for his musical talents and educational leadership, but for the warmth and humor he brought into every room. His legacy lives on in every note played, every Highlander who marches on, and every soul moved by the sound of the pipes.
