Ruby Thomas Richbourg

A celebration of her life will be held at 3 pm on Saturday, June 4 at Friends Home West. The family will receive friends following the service.

Ruby was born January 13, 1922 in Pickins, SC and was the youngest of four children. Upon graduation from Lander College in Greenwood, SC, she taught one year in her hometown high school. In June 1943, she and her sister, Jo Thomas Putnam, had a double wedding at Secona Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her daughter, Nancy Richbourg Roberts and by her husband, W. Lamar Richbourg who served two years in Europe during World War II and was employed by General Electric for 45 years.

For more than a decade Ruby helped many Triad families adopt children as a caseworker for the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina. She was active in many local organizations, serving as President of the Greensboro Lady Lions and President of the Fellowship Class at First Presbyterian Church. She was an active member and volunteer for the Jr. Woman’s Club, the PTA, Greensboro Lecture League, several bridge clubs, and a golfing member of Starmount Forest Country Club.

She is survived by her three sons and their wives, Alison Thomas Richbourg (Nancy) of Lake Oswego, Oregon, David Lamar Richbourg (Malinda) of New London, North Carolina, and Edward Wallace Richbourg (Mary) of Lawrenceville, Georgia and her son-in-law Thomas Michael Roberts of Durham, North Carolina. In addition, there are seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

It was her great joy to participate in the activities of her children and grandchildren and to get to know her great grandchildren.

She lived by her personal motto as printed in her Lander College yearbook: “Everyone needs a friend, so be one.”
