

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church with Rev. Father Eric Kowalski officiating. Bernie’s final resting place will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Born in Los Angeles, CA on October 28, 1924 to the late Benjamin Bernal and Agnes Perdew Bernal, Bernie spent the majority of his childhood in San Diego. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1941, and spent the duration of World War II on the USS Enterprise. Bernie retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after serving 26 years. He married the love of his life, Patricia Cruice, in 1948. Bernie began his second career in 1967 with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida as an Educator and FAA Examiner, retiring for a second time in 1994. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, Bernie was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Mrs. Patricia Cruice Bernal, in February of 2014; a daughter, Penelope Thompson; a sister, Genevieve Bernal; and a brother, Benjamin “Jack” Bernal.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Pamela Dalton and her husband David of Greensboro, North Carolina, Steven Bernal and his wife Joan of Tempe, Arizona, and Priscilla Youngs and her husband John of Indialantic, Florida; brother, Harry Perdue; sister, Helen Patterson, both of California; sisters-in-law, Mary Louise Cruice and Louise Cruice, both of New Orleans; grandchildren, Julia Parsons, Michael Dalton, Matthew Thompson, Shaun Thompson, Jason Bernal, Sara Bernal, Alexander Bernal, Courtney Youngs, and Brian Youngs; great-grandchildren, Abigail Dalton, Avery Dalton, Arsene Thompson, Asteria Thompson, and Jax Bernal; and several nieces and nephews in various cities in both California and Louisiana.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
