Sam ‘Sal' Siconolfi, 91, of Greensboro, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 31, 2026. Sal was born on December 15, 1934, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, son of the late Filippo and Ermelinda Dipietro Siconolfi. He was preceded in death by his brother, Philip Siconolfi Jr., and his sister, Eleanor Siconolfi.
Affectionately known as ‘Sal' by family and friends, he took great pride in his Italian heritage and delighted in sharing it with those around him. A devoted student of Italian cuisine, he loved reading culinary journals and preparing authentic meals using the freshest ingredients. Whether through a favorite family recipe, a humorous phrase, a poem, or a song recited in his beloved Italian language, Sal found joy in celebrating the culture that shaped him.
While deeply connected to his Italian roots, Sal was equally proud of his honorable service to his country as a Veteran of the United States Navy. His patriotism and sense of duty remained important to him throughout his life.
Sal dedicated his professional career to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, where he poured his talents and work ethic into the newspaper industry. A lifelong artist, he earned his degree in Art from the Carnegie Mellon University and never stopped creating. He loved sharing his illustrations and line drawings with family and friends, and his appreciation for music and the arts continually enriched his life.
After spending most of his years in Pennsylvania, Sal moved to North Carolina, where he reunited with and married a friend he worked with during high school, Dolores ‘Dolly' Siconolfi.
Sal warmly embraced Dolly's family and their Southern way of life, creating cherished bonds and memories that enriched his later years.
An avid gardener, Sal found peace and satisfaction in tending to his plants, while his love of reading kept his mind active and curious. He approached life with creativity, intellect, and a genuine appreciation for the simple pleasures that brought him happiness.
Sal is survived by his devoted wife, Dolly Siconolfi; her children, Maureen Coyne, Pat (Carol) Coyne, Kathy (Don) Doolittle, Susie (Marty) Blackwell, Sandy Peterson, Joe (Misti) Coyne, and the late Billy Coyne; and by his children Brad (Colleen) Wagner, Dina (Marty) O’Toole and Carla (Chuck) Diulus. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved deeply and who brought him immense pride and joy.
Sal will be remembered for his gentle artistic spirit, unwavering devotion to family, deep faith in God, love of learning, and the warmth, humor, and generosity he shared with everyone fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the art he created, and the countless memories he leaves behind.
