

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27407. Burial with military honors will immediately follow the service in Guilford Memorial Park. A reception will follow the committal in the Reception Hall of Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. The family will receive friends and loved ones from 1:00 until 1:50 p.m., at the funeral home, prior to the funeral service.
Samuel was born in Guilford County on November 1, 1947, to the late Samuel Vernon Petteway, Sr. and Blanche M. Buffaloe Petteway. He was a retired Major of the United States Air Force (1971-1991) and later retired from the Greensboro Police Department (2000-2010). While serving in the United States Air Force, he received the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, AF Commendation Medal, 1DEV, AF Outstanding Unit Award/W Valor/2Dev, National Defense Service Medal/1Dev, Humanitarian Service Medal/1DEV. He later received his MBA from UNCG and proudly served his community, his country, and his family. He was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Carol Petteway.
Those left to cherish his memory include his partner of 25 years, Melisa Hanks; his children, Amy Caroline Wood (David), and Dawn Christine Kestner (Daniel); stepchildren, Maggie Hanks (Wil), Drew Hanks (Shana); grandchildren, Victoria Walters, Ashley Walters (Michael), Amber Walters (Kendra), James Shepley, Colin Smith (Reba), and Jarron Coughi (Alaysha), Murry Hanks, Rozy Strickland, and Braxton Strickland; great-grandchildren, Isaiah Valentin, Jeremiah Valentin, Elijah Valentin, Caroline Walters, Landon Walters, Lily Johnson, Sariyah Coughi, and Roxy Shepley; brothers, Donald A. Petteway (Chris) and C. Doug Petteway (Dana), along with other extended family and friends.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the kind staff of Moses Cone Hospital’s ER and ICU, and the dedicated staff at Hospice Home of High Point for their compassion and commitment to his care and comfort during such a critical and difficult time.
