

Dr. Samuel Francis Thomas Sr., affectionately known as "Sam," passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026, at the age of 90, surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 13, 1936, in Red Springs, North Carolina, Sam lived a life marked by service, compassion, and dedication to his family, his profession, and his community. After proudly serving his country in the United States Navy, Sam pursued his education at St. Andrews Presbyterian College before earning his degree in Podiatric Medicine from the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He returned home to Greensboro, North Carolina, where he devoted more than three decades to caring for his patients as a respected podiatrist. Throughout his distinguished career, Sam was deeply involved in advancing his profession. He served as both President and Vice President of the North Carolina Foot and Ankle Society, represented his colleagues for many years in the House of Delegates, and was honored as North Carolina Podiatrist of the Year in 1977. His leadership, integrity, and commitment to excellence earned him the respect and admiration of peers across the state. Beyond his medical practice, Sam believed in giving back to his community. He volunteered with the North Carolina Diabetes Association, helping educate and support those living with diabetes, and faithfully delivered meals through Mobile Meals for many years. His generosity and quiet acts of kindness touched countless lives. Sam found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved spending time at the beach, where the sound of the waves and the warmth of the sun brought him peace and happiness. He was a familiar face at the YMCA, where he enjoyed working out, staying active, and connecting with friends. An avid golfer, Sam treasured the many rounds he played with his golfing buddies, sharing laughter, friendly competition, and lasting camaraderie. Above all, Sam was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He cherished time with his family and found his greatest joy in watching them grow and succeed. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Barbara, his son, Sam, his daughter, Julie and her husband, John; his cherished grandchildren, Mary Braxton and Sarah; his bonus grandson, Max; and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents and his four sisters Juliet, Lorraine, Genevieve and Madeline . Sam will be remembered for his loving spirit, excellent style, unwavering dedication to others, quiet humility, and lifelong commitment to serving both his community and his profession. His legacy lives on in the many lives he healed, the family he loved so deeply, and the example he set through a life well lived. A celebration of Sam's life will be held July 12, 2026, 2:00pm at First Lutheran Church, 3600 W Friendly Ave. Greensboro NC 27410 .
