Sandra Pope Thompson

February 22, 1942May 10, 2020

Sandra Pope Thompson, beloved wife, mother, grandma, sister and so much more, passed away peacefully on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 10th after a brief illness.

Sandra grew up in Indiana on the shores of Lake Michigan and met her lifelong love and husband of 56 years, David, as a senior at Purdue University. She was a high school teacher of many subjects, but most importantly, Sandra was a wife, mother and grandma. Sandra was a selfless servant in all that she did for her community and family. Her contributions were as visible as colonizing a new Alpha Phi chapter and leading the Greensboro Symphony Guild. Just as important to Sandra was dedicating her time to the library at First Presbyterian Church and time to whatever her family or friends needed, whenever it was needed. She was a gracious host, avid fan on many sidelines, and source of strength and guidance to many. All those she knew or helped will miss her and the loving example she set for everyone.

She leaves behind her husband David; three daughters, Kelly (and Joe) Pledger of Charlotte, Kristi (and Mo) McCord of Greensboro, and Kori (and Lee) Thompson of Mooresville; eight grandchildren, Collin, Kristopher, Carson, Katie, Ashleigh, Todd, Lauren and Liza Grace. She is also survived by siblings Carla (and Gib) Milkereit and Bill (and Yonnie) Pope, and many other loving extended family members and friends.

The family will make plans to celebrate her life when all those who loved Sandra can travel and gather together.

As long-time supporters of and volunteers at Victory Junction, the family asks that any remembrances be to www.victoryjunction.org.

Living ‘behind you’ in New Irving Park for the better part of 20 years, and sharing this passing of time to watch our families grow was a gift Sandy and I often shared when we crossed between our back doors. Sandy’s gracious personality and devotion to each of you - David, Kelly, Kristi, and Kori - has become a continuing story that plays out on our refrigerator every year from Christmas to Christmas. The harvest from her carefully sewn seeds is clearly seen in the faces of her 8 Grandchildren. Sandy undertook every task and commitment with faithfulness and finality; never did she fail. Our hearts ache, our belief that she is amongst the highest ranking Angels in heaven will help us shift some of this sadness, and we will tenderly remember each of you in our daily prayers. With love, Kathy & Steve Conowall & Family.

Words cannot express the sadness that we feel knowing that Sandy is no longer with us. We know she is in God’s hand and will be your guardian angel. The love that she gave you and the memories you shared will be your strength during these difficult times. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I was so sorry to hear of Sandy's passing. She and I were friends (and friendly academic rivals) in Chesterton from grade school through high school. Although I saw her only infrequently after high school, it was always a pleasure to get together with her. Her loss leaves a void for her family and friends, and they have my sincere condolences.

Dave and Family,
Although our sympathies and sadness for you and your family at Sandra's passing is acute, so also is our sincere appreciation and affection for one of God's beautiful people.
In working with Dave for many years I had always admired his empathy and humanness AND give Sandra credit for instilling these qualities in Dave. To me the Thompson family is legendary. To say that Sandra was proud of her daughters and grandchildren would be an understatement AND her hand can be seen in each of them. We celebrate with all the privilege of having known Sandra and our sincerest of condolences to Dave and family.
