

Born Sara McCarley Nance in Tampa, FL in 1916 to the late Pansy Petty and Dr. Charles Lee Nance of Tampa, she always considered herself a “Florida Girl.” She was a graduate of Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee, class of 1938, with a major in home economics. Sara then taught in the Tampa school system and later as an Assistant Kindergarten Teacher at First Presbyterian Church in High Point.
Sara was a longtime resident of Jamestown and a charter member of Jamestown Presbyterian Church. She and her husband Jim were among sixteen families that started JPC. She also enjoyed attending Christ Presbyterian Church (formerly Crestwood) when she moved to The Presbyterian Home of High Point. Giving of her time and in service to others, she started a volunteer endeavor to make bibs for the elderly at Presbyterian Home and headed the project for over 20 years. For this and other contributions to the church, she was honored with the Silent Angel Award in 2004.
Daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to many. She served her Lord, her family, her friends and her community in numerous unassuming ways, showing love, strength, compassion, elegance, humility, determination and humor.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James Dallas Howell, Jr. of Jamestown, son James “Jim” Dallas Howell, III of Jamestown, daughter Sara "Bookie" Howell Bayley of Montgomery, AL, grandson James “Bud” Dallas Howell, IV and sister Martha Nance Hisgen of Belleair Bluffs, FL. She is survived by her daughter Martha Nance Howell of Seattle, WA, daughter-in-law Kathy Howell of Jamestown, grandchildren Caroline (Dan) VanHarmelen, Lane Howell, Rachel Sneed, Amy (Dono) Deal, Adam Sneed, Adam (Sarah) Gray, and great-grandson William VanHarmelen and her "adopted daughters” - Barbara Moore, Anne Nulsen and Elizabeth Jones.

A Memorial Service celebrating Sara’s life will be held at the Jamestown Presbyterian Church at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday September 16, 2017 officiated by Pastor Newton Cowan. The family will receive friends following the services in the church fellowship hall.
