Sara King Smith

The funeral service will be Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at West Market Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Ellison officiating. Visitation will follow at the church. Interment will be held at Cross Creek Cemetery in Fayetteville, N.C.

Sara was born in Fayetteville, N.C. on May 23, 1919 to the late Henry and Lillian Warren King.

She is survived by daughters Jacqueline S. Dagenet of Greensboro and Patricia Coburn and husband Rufus of Austin , Texas. Other family members include son-in-law Sam Price of High Point; grandson Bradley Price of High Point; granddaughter Leslie Price Frederick and husband Brandon of Durham, N.C.; grandson Ted Coburn and great grandson Zachary Coburn of Frisco, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Gwendolyn Smith Price, grandson Nathan Coburn, and son-in-law Ken Dagenet.

She was a graduate of Greensboro College and received a Ph.D. in French Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She began her career as an educator in Denton, N.C, where she met her husband, Jack Wilbur Smith. During World War II she served her country by working for the American Red Cross while following him to Army bases from N.C. to Texas, and then California. After the war, she reared her family in Denton, N.C. She retired from Asheboro High School after 36 years in the teaching profession. During those years she travelled widely in Europe, sharing her love of learning with her students. In 1985 she moved to Miami Beach, Florida and worked seasonally for the I. R. S. Upon retirement she enjoyed spending her time between her family and friends in N.C. and Florida.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Pennybryn for their love, care and devotion to Sara during her stay there.

Memorials in her memory may be made to the Methodist Children’s Home, 1001 Reynolda Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
