Sarah was the daughter of Mary Robins Foust and John Robert Armstrong. She was the granddaughter of Dr. Julius I Foust, who served as President of Women’s College (UNC-G) for over 30 years and Thomas A. Armstrong who opened the first public swimming pool in Greensboro.
Sarah was born at the Women’s College President’s home in 1925. Following her birth, her mother passed away. Due to this, Granny Armstrong’s home became Sarah’s home for the next 40 years of her life. Sarah was so grateful to have two sets of grandparents who loved her dearly. Her Granny Armstrong became her mother.
Both of Sarah’s homes are unique today. The President’s home has now been moved, preserved, and is being used as the “Welcome Center” for UNC-G. Her Granny Armstrong’s home has been renovated and is being used as the “Welcome Center” for Greensboro College. In addition, UNC-G named one of the dormitories “Mary Foust” Hall in honor of her mother.
Sarah was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro. During her younger years, she was active in the church. She served as Superintendent of a Sunday school department, taught Sunday school, was active in her church circle and sang in the choir. Lately, she had been attending Burnett’s Chapel United Methodist Church where she enjoyed participating in their activities.
Sarah attended Curry School through the 8th grade. She transferred and graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in 1941. She graduated from UNC-G with a BBA degree. She worked in the Physical Plant Department at UNC-G for 31 years, retiring in 1992.
During her junior year at UNC-G, Sarah married Chief Warrant Officer Patrick G. Landry from Lafayette, Louisiana. She and Pat had four children. Along with raising her children, Sarah had many hobbies. She enjoyed collecting dolls, especially Barbie, Ken, and family. She loved planting beautiful flowers in her backyard garden. She designed and made needlepoint rugs and chair cushions. She enjoyed knitting, crewelling, and smocking dresses. As a lover of animals, Sarah cared for dogs, cats, and talking cockatiel birds. She enjoyed traveling to flea markets with her second husband, David A. Fiske, in search of desired treasures.
God and her family came first in Sarah’s life. She liked to celebrate holidays and birthdays with her family and friends. She loved to do for other people, particularly little children. She was full of compassion and hope and was a woman of true grace and elegance.
Sarah was preceded in death by her first husband, Patrick G. Landry and her second husband, David A. Fiske, Jr.; her son, Patrick G. Landry, Jr., and her daughter, Mary F. Landry.
