Sewell Hinton Dixon, Jr., M.D. of Charleston, South Carolina died on May 10, 2015 at Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community (Charleston, SC). Services commemorating his life will be at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Chapel in Greensboro, NC at 11:00 AM, Monday, May 18, 2015; with Inurnment in The Columbarium. The family will gather with friends in the church’s Haywood Duke room following the services.
Dr. Dixon, the son and grandson of Methodist ministers, was born in Rome, Georgia on April 10, 1939. He was reared in Conyers, Rossville, Fairburn, and Greensboro, Georgia – where he was an Eagle Scout – before moving to Atlanta. He was an honor graduate, Merit Scholar, and valedictorian of Henry Grady High School in Atlanta; a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Emory University College; and an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega and Phi Chi social fraternities.
He served as Intern, Assistant Resident, and Chief Resident in Surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. While at Duke, he was also an NIH Surgical Scholar, Surgical Director of the Physicians Assistant Program, Instructor in Surgery, and Consultant in Surgery to the Veterans Administration and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He was a Senior Surgeon (LCDR USNR) at the National Heart Institute, Clinic of Surgery, National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, MD.
Dr. Dixon held active medical licenses in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina and was certified by The American Board of Surgery and The American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology; a member of over twenty other major surgical, medical and healthcare organizations; author or co-author of over thirty published scientific articles; and throughout his career, results from his experimental and clinical investigations were presented at national meetings.
Dr. Dixon was in the private practice of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in Greensboro, NC for twenty years, where he personally performed more than twelve thousand major operations. He was President of his practice corporation for fifteen years and grew it from three to eight surgeons with a staff of forty, becoming one of the largest practices of its type in the state. Most importantly, operative results and outcomes of the practice equaled or exceeded those of any other academic or private practice in the state. Dr. Dixon introduced Physician Assistants to the region; established the first private practice, non-invasive diagnostic vascular laboratory in North Carolina; and was an original national investigator for endovascular laser angioplasty – presenting data before the FDA, organizing national symposia, and being an invited annual speaker to UCLA and other academic institutions. He was chairman of the major hospital committees at Moses Cone and Wesley Long Hospitals, President of the Greensboro Heart Association, and a Director of the North Carolina Affiliate of the American Heart Association.
After his career in private practice as a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, Dr. Dixon retired from clinical surgery and relocated to Charleston and Kiawah Island, SC. In 1993, he founded The Dixon Group, Ltd. to pursue interests in healthcare consulting; development of innovative healthcare services; and counseling in the nexus of medicine, law, and business. Clients included medical practices, hospital systems, wellness clinics, an international health charity, a major academic research program, and a developing medical school. In addition, The Dixon Group founded a medical business in the Eastern Caribbean nation of St. Kitts – Nevis. He was a Founding Partner of Dixon-Byrd Medical University and Health Care Systems of the Caribbean, Ltd. incorporated in St. Kitts & Nevis, West Indies.
Sewell Hinton Dixon, Jr., M.D. is survived by his wife of fifty years, Elizabeth Denison Dixon; his two daughters, Woods DeLay Dixon and Kilby Dixon Hoskins; his son-in-law, Paolo Passaro; and his granddaughter, Elizabeth Archer Hoskins.
