S. Roger Matthews died in peace on February 22, 2016. Born November 5, 1921 to Mary Green Matthews and Shuford Roger Matthews, Roger grew up in High Point and Thomasville. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BS in Commerce in 1942. Following graduation, he served as a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps in Alaska for 28 months during World War II. During his only furlough, Roger married Jacqueline Hardin of Boone on October 3, 1944 in Winston-Salem.
After the war, Roger served as a CPA and became a partner in Strand, Skees, Jones and Company before moving to accounting for a local manufacturing firm and finally in the mid-60’s to a private practice of accounting. Invested in his community, he served on the Greensboro City Council from 1961-1967, volunteered with the Greensboro Jaycees and its senior counterpart, the Jaycee Old Timers, for more than 60 years, was a long-standing participant in Toastmasters, and an active member of both the Gate City Kiwanis Club and the 100 Club. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro for 70 years. Roger was a passionate photographer, bridge player, ballroom dancer, traveler, and Carolina fan who walked with a keen sense of humor and a spirit of humility, optimism, and hope.
Roger is pre-deceased by Jackie, his wife of 50 years, and his sister, Susannah Matthews Newsome. He is survived by his three children: Roger Hardin Matthews and daughter-in-law, Jane Dougan, of Belmont, MA; Marianna Matthews Henry of Chapel Hill; and James Austin Matthews of Gastonia. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Christopher Hardin Matthews of Goffstown, NH; Marielle Aimee Matthews of Carrboro; Maria Katherine Henry of Philadelphia; Austin Ryan Matthews of Pittsburgh; and Ryan James Matthews of Gastonia along with three nieces and one nephew.
A memorial service will take place at the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be offered to the First Presbyterian Church, 617 N Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.
