Stuart was born on April 13, 1927, in the Bronx, New York. At the age of two, his family moved to Brooklyn where he grew up, spending summers with family at the Connecticut shore. He was an avid dancer, having won dance competitions in the New York City dance halls. Upon graduation from City College of New York, he was hired by Maidenform Lingerie Company and later, Stuart worked for over 30 years as a traveling sales representative for Shadowline Lingerie.
In Manhattan, Stuart met Naomi Iskowitz, a pretty showroom model, who had also grown up in Brooklyn. They married in 1955 and moved to Greensboro where they raised their three children, Alan, Shari, and Richard in Green Valley. On the weekends, Stuart played golf, and he and Naomi enjoyed boating with their children. They were active members of Beth David Synagogue where Stuart was a long-time member of the Men’s Club.
Upon retirement, he and Naomi remained in Greensboro to be close to family and lifelong friends. They enjoyed traveling, singing in the Chai Notes choir, and volunteering at Jewish Family Services and the Shepherd’s Center.
At Friends Homes West, he and Naomi were active volunteers and performed and sang in a variety of plays with the Skittish Friends group. Together they enjoyed the theater, concerts, and the arts.
He is remembered by family, friends, and his Friends Homes West and hospice caregivers for his positive attitude, friendly smile, and quick wit.
Stuart is predeceased by wife Naomi, his parents Reuben and Eva, and his brother Robert (Bobby). Many thanks to the Friends Homes West staff and hospice staff for providing compassion and care for Stuart in his final years of life.
Stuart is survived by children Alan (Kate) of Matthews, North Carolina, Shari (John) Heberton of Greer, South Carolina, Richard (Cathy) Kaplan of Raleigh, North Carolina, and his grandchildren Winter and Kayla (Jaxon) Ray-Kaplan, Michael Heberton (Rebecca), Amy Nash (Braden), and Andrew and Eva Kaplan.
A memorial service will be held at Beth David Synagogue, 804 Winview Drive, Greensboro, NC on Tuesday, December 12 at 2:00pm.
