Susan Wine Holt

September 20, 1945November 18, 2021

Susan was born in Greensboro, the daughter of Susannah Wimbish Wine and William Bernard Wine. She was preceded in death by her parents, by her sister, Townes Wine Banner, and by her brother William Graham Wine. She is survived by her sons William Newell Holt (Sara) and Graham Eugene Holt (Paula) and her darling granddaughter Mia James Holt, all of Greensboro; also, her nieces, Tracy Ledford, Carolyn Love, Susannah Brent and nephew Gray Wine.

Susan graduated from Walter Hines Page High School, and she attended Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She continued her education at Institut International Le Mensil in Montreux, Switzerland. While living in Europe she developed a lifelong interest in art and traveling. She loved going to museums and collecting art.

Susan’s roots go back at least ten generations in Guilford County. Her ninth great grandmother, Martha McGee Bell, was a heroine of the Revolutionary War Battle of Guilford Courthouse as a spy for the American forces. Susan must have inherited her love of adventure from this relative on her mother’s side.

Susan was sociable and enjoyed membership in many organizations. For decades she volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Green Hill Art Gallery. She was a member of the Antiques and Artifacts Club, the Bookmark Book Club, the Greensboro Cotillion, the Greensboro Debutante Club, the Wednesday Literary Club, the Ubiquity Garden Club and two bridge clubs. She was also a member of Holy Trinity Church.

During her fight with cancer, Susan’s favorite things were chocolate and visiting with her granddaughter, Mia Holt, who affectionately called her “Susu”. Susu was deeply loved by her family and friends.

A service will be held at Green Hill Cemetery Saturday December 4th at 2pm. There will be a reception following the service at Susan’s house.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to AuthoraCare Collective (formally Hospice of Greensboro), 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.

Susan was a wonderful friend and neighbor and I will miss her so much. She was my luncheon partner at Wednesday Literary Club and always asked me “save a seat I’m running a little late”! We shared many happy times together. The best was being together that November evening in 2008 when Obama became President. She fought long and hard and always with grace. A true and lovely lady.

My Aunt Susu ( as i have called her all my life), is one the most important people in my life. I am going to miss our conversations of art, food, politics, Europe, family , dogs, music and life. We had a special Aunt / Niece relationship. There is quite the reunion going on in those pearly gates! My and Carolyn's mother Townes, Uncle Graham, our grandparents Boppo and Mimie , as we called them, and Aunt Bee surely are having one heck of a party!

Susan was an elegant, smart and interesting woman who was a vital part of our neighborhood. We loved her travel stories and personally called on her often for help when planning our “across the pond” trips. We will miss her. May she Rest In Peace.

I am so sorry for your loss! Susan was one of a kind and I loved her spirit. We had the pleasure of traveling together in Europe, many times - and Susan's curiosity about other people, cultures, art and new experiences was inspiring. She was a wonderful wedding crasher too! I will miss her.
