Sue lived every day to its fullest. She never missed an opportunity to bring or have joy. She will be remembered fondly by her family and friends as being the life of the party—often narrating precious moments in song.
Sue was a champion of progressive Jewish values and the Reform Jewish movement. Sue and Jimmy were founding members of Temple Beth Shalom in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She advocated for equality in Israel and was an early member of Women of the Wall. Sue served on the Boards of the Union for Reform Judaism, URJ Crane Lake and Eisner Camps, World Union for Progressive Judaism, and the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism. Together, Sue and Jimmy were involved in the founding of the first progressive Temples in the Former Soviet Union. Sue and Jimmy traveled the world, often bringing along one of their children or grandchildren.
Sue passed away in her happy place - Newport, Rhode Island - where she spent her summers for several decades. Sue and Jimmy were promoters of the Newport Music Festival, supporting Newport Hospital and many other charities. During the winters Sue resided at the WellSpring Retirement Community in Greensboro, NC, and was an active member of Temple Emanuel.
A lover of Broadway theater, bridge games, French restaurants and long philosophical talks about the topics of the day, Sue was a great teacher, an avid learner and reader, and a mentor and confidant to friends of all ages and backgrounds.
Sue is survived by her children, Michael Klau (Michele), Flippy Tanenbaum (Harold), David Klau (Lizette), Cynthia Nettles (Mark); grandchildren, Kenneth (Jessica), Susan (Matthew), Elyssa (Mark) Ilana (Carlos), Samuel (Laura), Jaime, Johnathan, Jacob; great-grandchildren, Amelie, Elias, Jeanette, Juliette, Annie, and Evie.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 14th at 10:00 am at the Greene St Chapel of Temple Emanuel in Greensboro, NC. Private burial will follow at the Cone Family Cemetery. Reception honoring Sue’s memory will be held at WellSpring at 3:30 pm in the main building.
