Susan West

Susan “Sue” West, beloved wife, aunt, world traveler, and friend died on September 14, 2026. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones (including the furry ones). A native of Riverside, Illinois, she was the only child of Irene and Frank Vyhnalek.

Sue loved to travel, make friends, and meet new people. She was a consummate hostess, an art teacher, a travel agent, a master gardener, a creator of family traditions, and an animal lover who spent her life helping others feel welcome. Sue especially loved travelling to Saint Martin, listening to reggae, and being ‘Santa Sue’ to her nieces and nephews.

Sue had a knack for putting people at ease and cultivating friendships that became family. She possessed a soft and warm demeanor, was a wonderful listener, and a joy to talk with. She listened intently, remembered the little things, and always helped remind people of the good things in life – family, friends, and the joy of being together. Sue had a quiet and profound kindness that benefited everyone she met.

She is survived by her high school sweetheart, travel companion, and husband of 65 years, Michael West. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law Judy West Jisa, her brother-in-law Peter West, her six beloved nieces and nephews, her 19 grand nieces and nephews, and her community of friends from across the globe.
