Thelma Louise Walker Spoon left her family with a legacy of serving and keeping faith in Jesus Christ, the rewards of hard work and the value of moments spent in the company of family. She was reunited with her husband, Dewitt and received into the arms of her Savior on February 13, 2018. She was 89 years old. A graveside service to celebrate her life will be at 3 PM, Sunday, February 18 at Guilford Memorial Park, officiated by Rodney Mitchell. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:45 PM at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel prior to the service. Thelma was born in Greensboro to the late Banner Cleburne and Elva Schrum Walker. She worshipped at Rocky Knoll Baptist Church for many years where she demonstrated her love for Jesus by serving others. Thelma participated in Vacation Bible School, taught Sunday school, contributed to the church newsletter, and wrote and directed many church plays. She was a historian at heart and interviewed church members and wrote profiles for the Senior Spotlight section of the newsletter. Even in her last week, Thelma had printed a copy of one of these for the church. Her family will be forever grateful that she served as the family genealogist and composed several volumes of family history and organized the annual Spoon Family reunion. Thelma maintained a full time job at A.C. Corporation for many years. At the time of her retirement she worked as the Director of Documents and also edited the employee newsletter. Together with Dewitt she raised three children and sustained a loving Christian home. She was a talented seamstress and capable gardener. Her family remembers with laughter the overabundance of tomatoes one season that resulted in a surplus of homemade ketchup. She was very involved in her children’s activities and education and served as a Brownie Scout Leader and president of the Sumner School PTA. Thelma’s creative spirit was evident in her beautiful poetry. In spite of an active and fulfilling schedule, Thelma truly relished a simple life. She delighted in crossword puzzles, walking along the beach at her home in Emerald Isle, collecting spoons, and traveling. She particularly enjoyed her trip to China, Australia, New Zealand and the Holy Land. Thelma adored her grandchildren and always kept them in her prayers. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Paige and Joe McCargo of Reidsville, Kevin and Nora Spoon of Browns Summit and Tracey and Sue Spoon of Ellijay, GA; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren (with #10, Madelyn, on the way); sisters-in-law, Margaret Morgan of Greensboro and Betty Lou Dye of Jamestown; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband of 43 years, Dewitt, Thelma is preceded in death by her siblings, Elizabeth Crookshanks, Lyna Mae Chandler, Earle E. Walker, and B.C. Walker. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Rocky Knoll Baptist Church, 501 Kirkland St, Greensboro, NC 27406. Online condolences may be offered at
