Thomas Williams Merritt

June 26, 1947February 10, 2013

Thomas Williams Merritt, 65, passed away on February 10, 2013 at Moses Cone Hospital.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 2:00 pm at West Market Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Ellison officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Thomas was born in Greensboro, NC to the late Dr. and Mrs. J. Fred Merritt. He worked as a biomedical engineer with LabCorp for twenty years and then with Select Laboratory Partners. Thomas was mechanically inclined and could repair most anything. He loved High Rock Lake and boats. He had a passion for Carolina basketball and antique cars, especially Packards.

He was a devoted father; brother; grandfather; and uncle and was always there to help whenever he was needed. He made us laugh and smile with his lovable sense of humor and quick one- liners. He will be missed terribly and never forgotten.

Thomas is survived by his daughters, Karen Merritt Little and husband Christopher of Winchester, VA; twins, Ashley Clark and Andrea Marie Merritt both of Greensboro; brother, John Merritt and wife Lisa of Greensboro; grandson Thomas Haynes Little; nephews Jesse F. Merritt of Greensboro and Gregory P. Merritt of Charlotte; nieces Arden R. Merritt and Meghan Kendall Merritt of Greensboro, and his beloved golden retriever, Tess.

The family will visit with friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to the American Heart Association, 202 Centreport Drive, Suite 100 Greensboro, NC 27409.

Ashley and Andrea, Becca and I are thinking of you both and are praying for you in the days ahead. I can still see your dad at every dance recital setting up that VCR for the taping and all those girl scout outings. What an awesome dad! We love you both so much, Yvonne and Becca

Karen, Ashley and Andrea, we are very sad to read of your Dad's passing. We always enjoyed our conversations with him at the fence and we could rely on him for help with fixing anything. Scott said he always made mowing the yard look easy by riding his lawnmower and smoking his cigar. You are in our daily thoughts - I know what a challenge it is to face this change as my Dad passed away 5 weeks ago. We pray for peace to come to each of you just knowing he loved you so much and you were first and foremost in his life. Blessings to you always.

Dearest Karen and family,

Karen, we are heartbroken for you and your family. I loved hearing your stories about your dad. Having never met him, I could see through your eyes what a wonderful father he was to you and your sisters. We are praying that your pain is replaced with comfort and peace as you move forward one day at a time.

To my friend John, I hate how much you must be hurting right now because I know how close you and Tom were. You're never far from my thoughts and I'll keep you and your family in my heart.

I was so sadden to learn of Tom's passing. What a loss for all of us, but what a gain for heaven! He was such a character, I wouldn't believe him when he called my office the morning of 9-11 to tell me the first plane hit a building. He got real serious and I ask if he was kidding and he said "no" and that's all it took! I ran for the T.V.and told everyone else. We worked together at LabCorp/Orange Drive. It was the BEST of times and the BEST people!! Tom spoke often of his family his girls were his angels and his brother was his best friend. I will be praying for you Merritt family, as you get through the coming days. Know that Tom was loved and had many people that cared. I for one will miss him grately. Monisa Cox
