Tommy Carl Austin
June 15, 1944 – February 18, 2021
Tommy Carl Austin, 76, a resident of Shallotte, NC and a former resident of Greensboro passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at the SECU Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Bolivia. He was born June 15, 1944 in Union County the son of Thomas Jefferson and Sylvia Hudgins Austin. Tommy was a member of the graduating class of 1962 at Ragsdale High School. He attended GTCC. He worked with AMP, Inc. for many years as an Industrial Engineer. After leaving AMP, Inc. in the mid-1980s, he worked in Spartanburg, SC retiring from Steel Heddle before moving to Shallotte, NC in 2002. Tommy loved spending time with his family. He loved fishing, traveling to the NC mountains, and going on his first cruise in 2016. He was a die-hard fan of the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Braves, ACC basketball, and the NBA playoffs. According to Tommy, “There was always a ball game on!” Our dad is remembered as a loving father with a meek and mild personality. With his engineering background, he could fix or build anything. His advice was always welcomed, “Don’t buy the top-of-the-line, don’t buy the bottom-of-the-line, buy the one in the middle.” Vonda and her family will miss their tradition of putting a wreath on Grandma Austin’s grave and eating at Zack’s Hotdogs at Christmas. Our dad loved BBQ but always considered Stamey’s his favorite. What we wouldn’t give to hear just one more time, “Yeah, boy.” Tommy was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sheila Powell and his brother, Jerry Austin. Surviving are his daughter, Vonda Austin Steelman and husband Jeff of Thomasville; his sons, Mike Austin of Archdale, Matt Austin of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Tyler Steelman, Hayden Steelman, Nick Austin, Ben Austin, Elijah Austin and great grandchildren, Kylie Austin and Levi Austin. He is also survived by the mothers of his children, Tommie Ann Austin and Linda Austin Baker. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday February 25th, 2021 at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel. Interment will follow at Guilford Memorial. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the SECU Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Bolivia.

I REMEMBER BRINGING TOMMY TO WORK IN OUR INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING DEPT AT AMP INC. WE WERE GOOD FRIENDS AND STAYED IN CONTACT DURING ALL THE YEARS AFTER WE LEFT AMP .
HE WILL BE FONDLY REMEMBERED .

Biography
Tommy Carl Austin, 76, a resident of Shallotte, NC and a former resident of Greensboro passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at the SECU Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Bolivia. He was born June 15, 1944 in Union County the son of Thomas Jefferson and Sylvia Hudgins Austin.
