He is survived by daughter, Susan Evans of Stokesdale and grandson, David Neal of Kernersville. His wife of many years, Callie Eleanor Kirkman, preceded him in death.
Jim was born in Spray, North Carolina and completed high school in High Point. He was stationed in England and wounded in Europe while serving in the US Army from 1941-45. He retired as dispatcher of Gulf Oil Trucking but also worked in a variety of occupations, including the circus.
Jim led a very active life and had many diverse interests. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member in good standing of the Greensboro 0656 Lodge. He played golf and cycled well into his 90s; enjoyed collecting unusual things; watching news, sports and westerns; listening to music and playing all sorts of string instruments, alone and with friends. An avid reader and internet user, he kept up with world and local events and anything pertaining to World War II and the "Old West."
Jim never met a stranger and, because he was a born storyteller, he delighted his listeners with personal anecdotes, humorous tales, historical facts, and little known trivia. His memory, wit and sense-of-humor remained sharp to the end.
Jim often said that he had outlived all his friends and most of his enemies. In fact, he will be greatly missed by those who knew him and whose lives he touched.
Jim requested no funeral services. Memorial contributions can be sent to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Center in Winston-Salem.
