

Unita Pope Hayden, 89, formerly of Greensboro, NC retiring in Morehead City in 2005, died and is at peace with the Lord on Monday, November 6, 2023. Born in Kernersville, NC, daughter of the late loving Omer and Alma Pope. Unita graduated from Greensboro Senior High School and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City serving in the Women’s Circle and New Horizons group for the disabled who met weekly in the church for fellowship.
Unita, first and foremost was an unconditionally loving and dedicated Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, and dedicated Band Director in the Greensboro Public School System for 38 years. Quite possibly the first or of the group, of the first Women Band Directors in Guilford County until she retired in 1995. She was a member of the Women’s Band Directors National Association, Lifetime member of the National Educators Association, Graduate of East Carolina University and member of Delta Kappa Gamma as well as other teaching accolades during her tenure while involved with the church(s) she attended as organist and choir director.
Surviving are her son, Jeffrey Reeves Hayden; daughter, Jennifer Hayden Callahan and husband, Michael; granddaughters; Brianna Fletcher and husband Justin; great grandchildren Abby and Carter; granddaughter Chelsea Callahan, and granddaughter Rosemary West and all of her family. Unita's loving siblings are her brothers, O.N. Pope and wife Gail Pope, she recently passed and is in the Lord's care, and their family. Her other brother; Col. D. Brent Pope Sr. and wife Hiromi and their family, and Unita's sister, Donna Pope Giles Atkins and husband, Mike Atkins and their family. Including surviving, numerous loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
For those who would like to attend, a celebration of Unita’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 9, 2023 in the Lineberry Center at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel, 515 North Elm Street, Greensboro, immediately followed by a visitation at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
