Olathe, KS. She was born April 23, 1922 in Goldston, NC to Roland T. and Flora Gaines. Viola was the
second oldest of five sisters and one brother. After graduating from Greensboro High
School in 1939, Viola began her career with the Greensboro News & Record as a proof reader and
then as a linotype operator. She retired in 1983 after 35 years of service.
Viola married Radioman Second Class USN Edward W. King on April 29, 1944. She was the last of
her generation in our family. She was member of the Lutheran church, an avid bridge player, and a
dedicated Tar Heel basketball fan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sisters Bertie Lee Gaines, Elaine Fields,
Hazel Bergman, Maureen Taylor, and brother Roland J. Gaines.
Viola is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Edward G. and Mary K. King, grandsons
Edward K. King and wife Heather and great granddaughter Lilly, Andrew T. King and fiancée
Melissa Mairs, and Michael C. King and wife Anna. Other survivors include brother-in-law David
Taylor, nieces Sylvia Gamble, Kay Willett , Margaret Barth, Penny Simpson, Wendy Barnhardth, and
Joni Iglesias. Surviving nephews are Don King, Neal King and Richard McClellan and Brian Taylor. She is also survived by many great nieces and nephews.
Viola was a loving and kind mother, grandmother and aunt, and will be greatly missed by all. Services will be at Westminster Gardens Cemetery in the Colonial Mausoleum, 3601 Whitehurst Rd, Greensboro, NC, at 11:00 April 6, 2019.
