Virginia Booth Hollins, 88, passed from this earth to a Heavenly Homecoming on Wednesday, February 23, 2011, after an illness that ended at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, NC. Mrs. Hollins was preceded in death by her precious husband of 60 years, Faure Ewert Hollins. Having lived in Greensboro for 57 years, Mrs. Hollins had recently moved to her daughter’s home in Clinton, NC.
Visitation with the family will be from 1:00 – 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 26, 2011, at Lawndale Baptist Church, after a private burial. The Life Celebration Service for Mrs. Hollins will follow at 2:00 PM at Lawndale Baptist Church where Mrs. Hollins had served her Lord and Savior for 57 years, teaching Sunday School for adult women for most of those years. Virginia Hollins dearly loved her Sunday School Class members and the members of Lawndale Baptist Church, and enjoyed keeping in touch with the members and praying for them until her last days.
Virginia Hollins began teaching the Bible at the age of 10 when her pastor suggested that she was a prime candidate to teach young children at Nineva Baptist Church in Hardy, VA. Mrs. Hollins began teaching adult women at Asheboro Street Baptist Church, now Friendly Avenue Baptist Church, and continued teaching the Bible to an adult women’s Sunday School Class, the Kingdom Seekers, at Lawndale Baptist Church until the past year. Mrs. Hollins was an active member of the WMU missions’ organization at Lawndale Baptist Church and regular attendee at worship services and Bible Studies until her health continued to decline.
During WWII Mrs. Hollins worked in Portsmouth, VA, for the U.S. Navy while her husband Ewert was stationed in Portsmouth, VA, with the U.S. Navy. After settling in Greensboro, NC, in 1956, the United States Government once more called on Virginia to work with them at IRS in Greensboro, NC. Mrs. Hollins loved her job, her collegues, and she felt she was making a difference for her beloved United States of America.
Virginia Booth Hollins was born in Hardy, VA, on July 4, 1922, and is survived by: daughter Ginny (Virginia Anne) Hollins Phillips and son-in-law Reverend N. Ray Phillips of Clinton, NC; daughter Kathy Hollins Gregersen and son-in-law Dr. Jerry Gregersen of Northfield, MN; two granddaughters, Whitney Phillips Goulding of Cary, NC, and Ashley Chandler Phillips of Pasadena, CA; her sister Geneva Booth Dillon of Vinton, VA, and her brother and his wife, Buford and Betty Lou Booth of Hardy, Virginia; and her sisters-in-law Malicia Shaver and husband Clifford, and Elta Wilson, both of Copper Hill, VA; and many nieces and nephews.
The family thanks each Lawndale Baptist Church member, Rev. Marion
Boling, precious neighbors, Sampson County medical staff, WakeMed CICU staff, and other special caregivers for all of the attention and care given to their Mother and Grandmother, Virginia Booth Hollins, during her illness.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Ewert and Virginia Hollins’ Celebration Building Fund for the Children’s Wing at Lawndale Baptist Church, 3505 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro, NC, 27408.
