Wayne was born in Landis, NC to the late Frank Myers Weddington and the late Della Mae Weddington. After high school graduation, Wayne enrolled at Catawba College, where he set many track records. Wayne took a break from school after his second year at Catawba and went back after his first few years of marriage to attend Guilford College and UNC-Greensboro, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
In high school, Wayne met the love of his life, Bonnie Lynn Walls and relentlessly pursued her. He knew she was “the one”. His wife and family were his top priority in everything he did. Bonnie and Wayne were married on June 12, 1965 and have been together for more than 60 years. They shared their life in Greensboro, NC where they built a home and started a family. Wayne and Bonnie have two children, Lynn Weddington and wife Anna of Greensboro, and Emily Weddington Dalmata and husband Lawrence Joseph “LJ” of Greensboro. He was a loving, doting, grandfather to Cameron and Madelynne. They were the highlight of his days, shopping sprees, movie nights, relaxing days, and spoiling them brought joy to his heart!
After moving to Greensboro, he began working for the Internal Revenue Service in Greensboro where he remained until retirement. Wayne is survived by his wife, children, and brother, Gene M Weddington (Hilda), his niece and nephew and their children.
When he wasn’t spoiling his grandchildren, he was fishing with Mickey, playing golf with the guys, or spending time at the beach! He loved to be with family and friends. He was a wonderful, loving, dedicated father. He coached his daughters soccer team, softball team, and, later, with his daughter coached the tennis team. He traveled everywhere to never miss a game, match, or school event. He would go the extra mile for his family and friends and all benefited from his vast knowledge about any and all things. A lover of cars, travel, and Duke, he spent many trips with his brother and family to car shows, Duke games, Final Fours, ACC tournaments, and experiencing new destinations every chance he had; St. Maarten, Disney, and Williamsburg were some of his favorites. Wayne never met a stranger, was a generous volunteer, and was passionate about being involved in everything that meant something to him. He served as President of the board of the IRS Employees Federal Credit Union, a member of the NTEU, and as Secretary on the board of his beach’s HOA. He was voted the volunteer of the year in 2013 from the NC Credit Union League and was designated an honorary member for life in 2022.
A visitation will be held February 28 at 1:00pm, followed by a celebration of life service at 2:00pm at Hanes-Lineberry, 515 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27401. Following the service, he will be buried at Westminister Gardens. For those attending the service, the family request that you wear a mask.
The family thanks Wayne’s many friends and loved ones for the strong support and love throughout his illness, especially the last few weeks. There will never be another one like him and he will be missed dearly. We are all lucky to have known and loved him!
