Mr. Christian was born on January 28, 1954 in Raleigh, NC, the son of the late Bill and Fannie Christian. At 16, Matt’s family moved to Atlantic Beach, NC where his parents purchased the Anchorage Marina. Matt excelled in many sports and was the quarterback for his high school football teams in Raleigh and Morehead City. Matt graduated from NC State University School of Design where he was the president of the Kappa Alpha Order.
After graduation, he returned to Morehead City to work with his father at the Anchorage. While working at the Marina, Matt met his wife, Grey and they were married. Matt and Grey started their family while living at the Marina. Always wanting to do more for his family, Matt moved them to Raleigh to begin his over thirty year career in the tobacco industry. After Raleigh and Winston Salem, then eight years in Georgia, Matt returned with his family to North Carolina to work for Shamrock Corporation in Greensboro. He served there for eighteen years as Vice President and Director of Operations, a job he loved and took great pride in.
Family has always been the most important part of Matt’s life. He spent many hours coaching his girls’ basketball teams and always tried to be available for any function his family needed him. He enjoyed spending time with his family and playing with his grandchildren.
Matt leaves behind his wife, Mrs. Grey Burgess Christian, his two daughters, Alston Christian McNairy and her husband, Glenn of Charlotte, and Katie Christian Saunders and her husband Grady of Greensboro, and 3 grandchildren, William McNairy, Arrington Saunders and Murphy McNairy; two sisters, Cynthia Christian Carter and her husband Lyon of Kingston, MA and Lucy Christian Bradsher of Wilmington, NC and his loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
