Bill was born on October 5, 1939 in Washington, DC to the late William Campbell and Mary Ethelyn Warren Giddings. He grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland and after graduating from Montgomery Blair High School in 1957 he served with the US Coast Guard. Bill then worked for the Maryland State Roads Commission helping supervise the initial work on a new super beltline being built around Washington – the famous, or perhaps infamous Capital Beltway.
Bill attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and graduated in 1964. While at UT, he was a member and officer of the Kappa Alpha Order, served as Chairman of the University Center and was inducted into the Scarabbean Senior Society.
Following college, Bill was employed in sales with the Building Products Division of Johns Manville Corp. faithfully serving his company and customers for over 38 years. During his career, he enjoyed supporting his industry as an active member of numerous trade organizations. While living in Greensboro, Bill was active with the Guilford Hills Swim and Tennis Club and the Page High School Athletic Booster Club; serving two years as President of the latter. Upon retirement in 2003, Bill became involved with researching his family’s genealogy and ultimately compiled and published three books on his ancestors. He also participated in the Leadership Greensboro Seniors program Class of 2007. Bill enjoyed volunteering as part of the weekday work crew with Habitat for Humanity and supporting the Greensboro Urban Ministry’s #FeedGSO Food Drives.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jeanette; three children, son Bill (Laura) and his daughters Rachel and Sophie, daughter Suzanne (Chris) and his daughters Virginia, Eliza and Charlotte, daughter Mary (Marcus) and their daughter Marlowe and his son Caleb. He is also survived by two sisters; Mary Frantz (Dick) of Pottstown, PA and Kathryn Allan (Bruce) of Pawleys Island, SC, 2 nieces, 2 nephews, 7 grand nieces, 4 grand nephews, 1 great grandniece and 1 great grandnephew. He was predeceased by his nephew, Bill Pedrick of Dexter, NY. The tremendous pride and joy that his precious family brought to Bill was immeasurable. He loved his entire family dearly and cherished family gatherings, especially those held at the coast and Capon Springs, WV.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, July 22nd at First Presbyterian Church where he was a member of the Young Men’s Bible Class. The family will receive guests immediately following the service. Bill considered his Christian faith his most precious possession and marrying Jeanette his most fortunate life-decision. He was most appreciative of the tremendous cardiac health care spanning the last 20 years that he received from Drs. Tennant, Gerhart and Smith at Cone Heart Care, Drs. Harrison and Hughes at Duke Health Care and their respective teams. The family would like to thank the compassionate and caring medical teams at Duke who guided and walked alongside them over the last week.
In lieu of flowers, donations are asked to be made to a charity of one’s choice.
