William Jackson Groome, 78 years of age, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2025, at his home in Greensboro, NC. He was deeply loved and adored by his family and friends and will be greatly missed, yet we rejoice in knowing that he is at peace with God in Heaven.
Bill was born on February 21, 1946, in Greensboro, NC to his parents, Bill and Doris Groome. He had the blessing of growing up in the rural Greensboro community known as “Groometown” where he played, worked and learned the many lessons in life from his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins and many friends. His brothers were his touchstones and their love for each other is forever and timeless.
Bill excelled in all sports; however, his greatest love was for the game of baseball. His trip to play in the Pony League World Series was one of his greatest and proudest baseball memories. He was a pitcher and first baseman and was so proud to play for his Alma Matters, Ragsdale High School and for the UNC Tar Heels during his freshman year. He also loved playing softball with his daddy as “coach” later in life for the Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department. Bill coached Pony League baseball for several years and was a big influence on many young players who still remember him well.
He was a graduate from Lucy Ragsdale High School, received his B.S. in Business Administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a Certified Public Accountant. Bill proudly served in the National Guard. He began his accounting career at A.M. Pullen in Greensboro. He soon moved his young family to Asheboro, NC in 1973 to work for Acme McCrary Corporation where he laid down lifelong roots. It was here that his career took him on a path where he would grow professionally and where he met many dear friends along the way. Bill also dedicated his time to being a church youth counselor and treasurer, Kiwanis member and volunteer fireman.
More than anything, his greatest love was his family. In March 1984 he married the love of his life, Kaye. Together throughout the years, they lived and loved life to the fullest. He was a very kind and devoted father, and he loved his grandchildren and great-granddaughter with all his heart. The memories are priceless, and his legacy will live on with all that knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Armfield Groome and Doris Moore Groome, and his brother, Dan Groome. He is survived by his wife, Kaye Whitman Groome of Greensboro; daughter, Kimberly Groome Allgood of Oak Island; daughter, Jennifer Groome of Asheboro; grandson, Chase Bouchillon and his wife, Jossalin of Old Fort; granddaughter, Bailey Allgood Queen and her husband, Matt of Charlotte; grandson, Carter Allgood and his wife, Joselyne of Asheboro; great-granddaughter, Emery Katherine Bouchillon of Old Fort; brother, Steve Groome and his wife Cathie of Colorado; brother, Ben Groome of Greensboro; his nephews, Nathan, Jared, Jacob, Michael and Gabriel Groome; great-grandson Queen “on the way” and his beloved puppy, Willow.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, February 22 at 2pm at Groometown Methodist Church, Greensboro, NC. Visitation will be held at the church at 1pm prior to the service. The family has asked that in the lieu of flowers, donations be made to http://spot.fund/MemorialAndWidowFund
