William Edward Noell (“Bill”), born on January 6, 1942, passed away peacefully from this world and into the loving presence of Jesus his Savior on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at the age of 83 while surrounded by his family. His example of love, gentleness and kindness has left an impact on all who knew him and will never be forgotten. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and many more whose lives were touched by his.
He was married for 54 wonderful years to his bride, Joan Noell, and together they raised their two beloved children, JoAnn and Ben in Jamestown, NC. He loved his family dearly, treasuring times at family gatherings, birthdays, holidays, and summer beach trips; and they loved him deeply in return.
Bill was known by several endearing nicknames depending on his season of life. As a youngster, he was Billy. To his wife and coworkers, he was Bill. To his kids, he was Dad. To his precious grandchildren, he was Daddy Bill.
He enjoyed a wide variety of jobs throughout his years, taking his first employment as a paper boy, and then as a bag boy at the local Winn Dixie grocery store. Graduating from Broughton High School (Raleigh, NC), he was accepted to the NC State University Forestry School. During one of his summers in college, he had the opportunity to work out west in the forestry service of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. However, after a close call battling a forest fire, he decided to transfer to UNC Chapel Hill, and graduated with a major in Business Administration.
Immediately after graduating from UNC, he entered the United States Army Reserves where he served for 4 and a half years and began what would become the bulk of his career at Burlington Industries (BI). His first position as a shipping manager took him to New Jersey; and as a southern gentleman living in the north, he collected many amusing stories about traffic patterns and toll booths. During this time, he met and married the love of his life, Joan Moore, and started a family and life together. When their children were young, he worked in the textile division of BI, which resulted in several trips to their Ireland office. Although grateful for the opportunity to see another country, he could never get home fast enough to be together with his family again.
After 32 years, he retired from BI as a cost accountant and began a new chapter of his career at CRG. This was a special time in his life as he was able to share his many years of knowledge and experience with a wonderful group of co-workers for the next 10 years. He thoroughly enjoyed the business world and especially his coworkers, many of whom became life-long friends.
Bill was also an avid outdoorsman. From hooking red drum on the coast, to hunting pheasants in Kansas with his Brittany Spaniels, he was drawn to the open country, coastal regions, and anywhere in between. However, his greatest enjoyment in any of these things was the opportunity to spend time with friends and family enjoying God’s creation together. Most notably, was his close relationship with his church family. He lovingly embraced people of all ages and walks of life, taking a keen interest in everyone he spent time with. 1 John 4:19 says, “We love, because [Jesus] first loved us,” and is exactly how Bill lived his life.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt “thank-you” to all the individuals who cared for Bill in his final days: Noelia, Ana, Kim and Lester, Joe (his barber), Franchesca and the Bayada staff, and everyone at Hospice of the Piedmont and Hospice Home at High Point. Your compassionate care was a true blessing. To our family, friends, and church family at Mount Pisgah Church and at Pleasant Garden Baptist Church, we thank you for your faithful prayers, visits, phone calls and texts.
Born in Raleigh, NC to William Benjamin Noell, Jr. and Blanche Howell Noell, he was proceeded in death by his parents and precious granddaughter, Annaliese Madison Noell. Bill is survived by his wife Joan Moore Noell, daughter JoAnn Noell Scott (Marc), and son Edward Benjamin “Ben” Noell (Barbara), three grandchildren Abigail Mary Scott, Lance Corporal John William Scott (Abbie), Karissa Mae Noell, as well as his sister Polly Noell Litton, and two loving nieces Laura Wesolowski (Kevin), and Valerie Hurst.
A Celebration of life service will be held at Mount Pisgah Church on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 1:00pm. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service at 12:00pm. The service will be live-streamed for those who are not able to attend in person.
