Rex Edward Alexander, 79, of St. Paul, passed away on October 18, 2023. He was born on January 4, 1944 in Indianapolis, Indiana the son of Edward “Whitey” and Ida (McCann) Alexander. Rex was a 1962 graduate of New Salem High School and was also a 35 year member of the New Salem Alumni. He was a United States Marine Vietnam Veteran. Rex was a three time Post Commander of the V.F.W. Post #5584, a Life Member of the V.F.W., a Life Member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, a Life Member of the Howard County Vietnam Veterans Association, and a member of the American Legion Post #129. He was the Chairman of the successful “All Wars” Monument Committee dedicated in 1997, on the Decatur County Courthouse Square. Rex worked at GE in Shelbyville, for 20 years with 10 of those in Supervision. He later worked at Knauf Fiberglass in Shelbyville, from 1987 until retirement in 2006. Rex was a beloved Father, Grandfather, and Friend to so many. He never met a stranger and enjoyed eating out with friends and family.
Survivors include: Daughters, Damitria (Glenn) Saler, Hebron, Kentucky and Teresa Haas, Rushville, IN; Brothers, Mike (Mary) Alexander, Columbus, IN and Ronnie (Estella) Draper, Columbus, IN; Grandchildren, Chloe Saler, Alexander “Alex” Saler, Bethany Brooks, Cati Jo Whaley, and Tony Porter; and Several Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his Parents; Daughter, Stephanie Lynn Hummell; Sisters, Bev Gardner and Penny Martin; Grandson, Ryan Phillip Haas; and Granddaughter, Summer Lynn Haas.
A visitation for Family and Friends will be held at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home on October 25, 2023 from 12:00 pm until the time of the Funeral at 2:00 pm. Rev. Daniel Smith will be officiating and Military Honors will be conducted by the United States Marines and the American Legion Post #129. Burial will be at Hopewell Cemetery at a later date.
