March 10, 1931 – September 12, 2026
Barbara Birt, 95, went home to be with the Lord on September 12, 2026, in Orlando, Florida, where she was recovering from surgery following a fall. Born in Portland, Oregon, she was the daughter of the late George and Katherine Geiling.
Barbara graduated from Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1949. She earned her teaching degree from Central Washington College in Ellensburg and later her master's degree from Ball State University. Teaching was her calling, and she devoted 32 years to elementary education. Nothing made her day more than running into former students, now grown and working in careers they loved, and receiving a grateful hug.
While teaching first grade in Seattle, Barbara met Harry Birt Jr., who was stationed there with the Coast Guard. They married on June 24, 1956, at the First Congregational Christian Church in Greenville, Ohio, and made their home in New Weston, sharing 55 wonderful years together until Harry's passing in May 2012.
Barbara was a proud member of the Darke County chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. In retirement she loved to travel and read, and she rarely missed her grandchildren's games, cheerleading, or dance recitals. She always had photos on hand and was delighted to share the latest news about them.
She is survived by her sister, Bette Fosburg of Hoquiam, Washington; her son, Brad Birt (wife, Teresa Birt); her daughter, Shari Birt Gallo (husband, Bruno Gallo, MD); and her grandchildren, Nick Gallo, Nina Gallo, MD, and Nicole Birt Dulle (husband, Andrew). She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Harry.
A private graveside service for family will be held at Holsapple Cemetery, with Reverend Anthony Cutcher officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio.
Fond memories and condolences may be shared with the Birt and Gallo families at www.zecharbailey.com
