Richard J. Murphy January 23, 1933 – December 29, 2020

Richard James (Jim) Murphy, age 87, of Greenville, Ohio went to be with our Lord on December 29, 2020 after a long illness. Born on January 23, 1933 in Greenville, he was the son of the late Richard H. and Bernice (Ungericht) Murphy.

He was employed as a radio technician supervisor at the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) for 39 years, retiring in 1994. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Gettysburg/Bradford until he was drafted into the US Army during the Korean War, serving from 1953 to 1955. He enjoyed traveling worldwide and visiting national and local parks to hike and birdwatch. A long-time Ham Radio operator and member of the National Association for Amateur Radio (ARRL), he was proud of achieving contact of all but two locations worldwide. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, the Greenville High School Alumni Association and of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Greenville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Francis Murphy, Susanne Murphy Hines and William D. Murphy along with his mother’s second husband, Sidney C. Horn.

(Cheyrou-Lagreze) Murphy of Perigueux, France, his sister, Patricia (Jacque) Durr of Fountain Inn, South Carolina and children Ellen (John) Spinks of Clayton, Ohio, Leslie (Jim) Blankenship of Lewisburg, Ohio, Monique (Frank) Mijares of Oceanside, California and Philip Murphy with Kelli Hargrave of Lubbock, Texas. Grandchildren include Ryan (Jessica) McClanahan, Ben Spinks, Jennifer Garren, Derek Cain, Melissa Butler and Francois Mijares along with nine great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life with the immediate family will be planned for a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers the family would desire memorial contributions be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 131 East 4th Street, Greenville, Ohio.

So sad to lose Jim - He was my uncle and lived in Greenville close to our family home. Being that my mother and Francoise were sisters we were able to have the Murphy family in our lives throughout the many years. Jim and I (Steve) were avid amateur radio operators and liked to share info on equipment and worldwide communications . My wife (Paula) and I enjoyed visiting with them whenever we went back home or at Murphy family get-togethers.

We will think of you always and keep you in our prayers.

You are now at peace - put in a good word or two for us!
