Alegra Lei-Naala Keliikuli Born in Hawaii, Edith never forgot her roots. Though she lived the last four decades in South Carolina, she would often prepare a Hawaiian luau for her family whenever she could secure ingredients from relatives in the islands. She and her sister Venus enjoyed hanging out together, frequenting the Chinese or Japanese restaurants in town, and reflecting on their time growing up in a large family on the island of Oahu. Their language was English with a smattering of Hawaiian words that would sometimes in conversation raise a Southerner's eyebrow.
Edith had a natural talent for working with her hands. She was a graduate of Honolulu Tec-College. Whether it was sewing, crocheting, needlepoint, or ceramics, she was always busy learning and perfecting her craft. She enjoyed sharing her handmade creations with others. She also liked interior decorating, and spent untold hours refurbishing her home, taking on whatever she thought she could tackle, from wallpapering to flooring to painting, you name it.
In her later years, she lived with each one of her children for a time, helping with the kids and grandkids. Family was important to her, the concept of ohana being so much a part of her Hawaiian heritage.
Edith became a Christian through her sister's witness and through friends who encouraged her to step out in faith. This faith she has passed on to many of her children and grandchildren as a lasting legacy.
Her family bids her farewell with the words of the Hawaiian classic song Aloha 'Oe: "here's to you a fond embrace, goodbye until we meet again".
