Barbara Henson Carter

Barbara Henson Carter, 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 21, 2021 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. She was born in Greenville, SC to the late Frederick Nathan Henson and Annie Smith Henson.

She is predeceased by her husband Charles Allen Carter (Red), of 63 years and her son Charles Allen Carter, Jr. She is survived by her children, Steven Henson Carter (fiancé' Sherry Koenig) and Melinda Sue Carter (Susie), both of Greenville, SC; Daughter in law Lisa Carter; six grandchildren; Trey Carter and wife Nicole, Lindsey Carter Sebastian and husband Joaquin, Steve Carter Jr., Caroline Carter Knight and husband Matt, Carter Soutier and Christian Soutier and six great-grandchildren; Logan, Mack and Charlie Carter and Lucca, Sophie, and Elena Sebastian, sisters Rebecca Henson Freeman (Claude) and Olivia (Libba) Huguenin (Frank), and sister-in-law Charlotte Taylor Carter.

Barbara graduated from Greenville High School class of 1951. She attended Greenville General Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1954. She was a registered nurse at the offices of Dr. Eugene Yeargin Pediatrics, Dr.'s Anderson and Gowen Internal Medicine, and Greenville General Hospital. Later, she earned a respiratory therapy degree and was the Director of the Respiratory Therapy Department at Greenville General Hospital System for ten years and owned and operated The Diet Center in Greenville.

Barbara, along with her husband Charles, were licensed pilots and enjoyed flying together for many years. Their favorite destination was their Daytona Beach condominium. Barbara and Charles also spent time at their lake house enjoying time with family and friends. She was a member of Pendleton Street Baptist Church.

Barbara loved nothing more than being with her family for Sunday dinners and holidays. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She was very compassionate and was always there for any family or friends who needed her at their side in difficult times. She was a voracious reader, had a wonderful sense of humor, and the matriarch of the Carter family. She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the Alzheimer's Association in the name of Barbara Henson Carter.

The family will not be present, however, friends and family may come pay their respects on Thursday, February 25, 2021 from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Century Drive, 311 Century Drive, Greenville, SC 29607. Graveside services will be held on Friday, February 26, 2021 at 3:00 PM at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
