Betty was born in Savannah, Georgia, to the late Mattie Cecil Key and James P. Key. After meeting in the 1960s, Betty married William D. Campbell and together they welcomed one son, Jeffrey D. Campbell.
Betty's family lovingly remembers her as someone who always put others' needs before her own. She hosted the Campbell Family Christmas each year and spent much of her time traveling with her husband who was a gospel singer. Her Pentecostal faith was central to her life, and until she was no longer able, she attended New Beginning Ministry of Taylors.
Professionally, Betty took great pride in her career with The Greenville News, where she worked for more than 60 years.
In addition to her husband and parents, Betty was predeceased by her brothers James P. Key Jr. and Billy O. Key (Sarah).
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Jeffrey D. Campbell; granddaughters Kristin Keyann Campbell and Jessica D. Sims, who lovingly called her "Mema"; her cousin, Don Baker; her nephews, Brett Key and Dana Key; and her niece Bethel Key Tucker.
Visitation will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Remembrance Mausoleum, at 1901 Wade Hampton Blvd, Greenville, SC, 29609 on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at 11:30 am. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm. Betty Jo will be laid to rest in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
