Betty was born and raised in Richmond, VA. After graduating from John Marshall High School, where she was voted wittiest, Betty worked for the phone company. Several years after marrying Jimmie, the family moved to Milton, WV where Jimmie continued to work for what was now called The Chessie System. Betty provided a loving home to her husband and three children. She also enjoyed the times that family would come from Virginia to spend time with the family. Betty loved creating a nurturing environment for her family both physically, intellectually and spiritually. Both Betty and Jimmie made sure that the family attended Sunday school and church services at Milton Baptist Church. She provided many fantastic meals that her family enjoyed immensely. Betty spent many hours in the yard planting flowers, shrubs and trees. Eventually, neighbors would bring their friends to see the beautiful gardens she had created. Betty was always involved in her children’s activities at school and after school. She created some of the best Halloween tricks for the school carnival, was a scout leader and cheerleading coach. As the children grew Betty began working at different jobs including lecturing at Weight Watchers and at a local department store where she quickly became a valued employee in the silver and china department. After more than twenty years in West Virginia, Jimmie’s job lead them to Neptune Beach near Jacksonville, FL. for the next stage of their lives.
Basking in the sun and enjoying the ocean breezes Betty expanded her love of gardening by becoming very active in the local gardening club serving in several different positions over the years. She won a number of awards for her flowers, plants and arrangements. While still providing many delicious meals for Jimmie and when family visited, Betty was now able to enjoy dining out more often. Betty and Jimmie would find many great places to eat and loved to share their favorites when family visited. On Sundays Betty and Jimmie would attend Neptune Beach Methodist Church where they made many friends.
Betty, with her sister Barbara, became members of the UDC, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and enjoyed tracing family histories to identify ancestors that would link them to the Civil War, the War of 1812 and even the Revolutionary War.
After more than 25 years enjoying life in Florida, Betty and Jimmie wanted to return to Virginia to be near family again. In February of 2017, Betty was in poor health and it was decided that she would move down to South Carolina to be near her daughter Lisa. Betty lived a comfortable, quiet life enjoying Lisa’s constant attention and the attention of her caregivers until her last breath.
A Celebration of Life Service is planned for April 13, 2019 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Woody Funeral Home Atlee Chapel in Mechanicsville, VA.
