

Birdie Weiner Donner of Greenville died Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at the age of 97. Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, she was a daughter of the late Yetta and Louis Weiner who immigrated from Riga, Latvia. Birdie was educated in Elizabeth, New Jersey schools, and was the first place winner of a city-wide mathematics contest in elementary school. After her marriage she worked as a bookkeeper in the office of the Union County NJ Treasurer until her retirement. A resident of Greenville since the 1970's, she was a member of Temple of Israel and the Temple of Israel Sisterhood. She served as a volunteer for the Greenville Hospital System for over 25 years, and most recently assisted in the reorganization of the hospital archives. Birdie was an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast and was still doing the daily puzzle until a few days before her death. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Harry Donner and three sisters. She is survived by her daughter Alice Donner Schlein and son-in-law Dr. Bruce Schlein of Greenville; son, Michael Donner and daughter-in-law Jane Donner of Hillsdale, New York; grandsons, William Schlein (Mimi Schlein) of Greer, SC and Erik Schlein of Miami, FL; and granddaughter Hannah Donner of Boulder, CO; and great-grandchildren Karl Schlein and Catalina Schlein of Greer and Isobel Donner-White of Massachusetts. Funeral services for Mrs. Donner will be Friday, October 24 at 2:00pm at the Temple of Israel with Rabbi Jeremy Master officiating. Burial will follow at Beth Israel Cemetery.
