She was born September 28, 1937 in Washington, DC to the late Dr. Charles W. and Camilla C. Harnsberger. Growing up in Washington, DC, she graduated from Coolidge High School in 1955. After high school she earned a two year business degree from Averett College in Danville, VA. She obtained a position as executive secretary to Dr. Hertz, who was the head of the cancer department at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. While working at the NIH, she attended night classes at The American University in Washington, DC. It was while at NIH that her friends and colleagues began to refer to her as Cam. Cam’s next position was working for a pharmaceutical company in Richmond, VA.
Cam met her future husband, Donald L. Chamberlin, in Bethesda, and they were married on April 9, 1966. Donald and Cam moved to Decatur, GA where Donald held a banking position. It was during her time in Decatur that she was saved by the Lord Jesus and began her long, loving, and faithful walk with her Lord.
Donald procured a franchise for a Sears Catalogue store in Manning, SC, and while living in Manning, Cam and Donald were blessed with the birth of their two children. Charles was born on December 4, 1969 and Carolyn on December 8, 1973. While lovingly mothering Charles and Carolyn, Cam helped Donald in the operation of the store. She received high compliments from many for the excellent quality of her work with customers of the store.
Cam suffered the passing of both her husband Donald and son Charles in the same year, 1994, and same month, April. By the grace of our good God, which included much loving support from her family and dear friends, Cam stayed strong in the midst of her great grief. Following her husband’s death, Cam and her daughter Carolyn moved to Greenville, SC. They loved spending time together and were so thankful that they lived close to each other. Sadly, Carolyn passed on January 16, 2020.
Cam had a great love for her precious brothers and sisters in Christ at Faith Free Presbyterian Church. She loved worshipping, Bible study, fellowship, prayer meetings, and being active in the ministries of the church. The Lord, and His church were the core of her well-lived life.
A visitation for Camilla will be held Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Faith Free Presbyterian Church, 1207 Haywood Road Greenville, SC 29615 with the funeral to follow at 12:00 PM. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park 1 Pine Knoll Drive Greenville, SC 29609.
