He was born in Greenville, SC to the late Joseph and Nell Carter. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Henson Carter of 65 years. He was predeceased by his son Charles Allen Carter, Jr. and his brother Kenneth Joseph Carter (Blue) and wife Charlotte. He is survived by his children, Steven Henson Carter (fiancé’ Sherry Koenig) and Melinda Sue Carter (Susie), both of Greenville, SC; Daughter in law Lisa Carter; six grandchildren; Trey Carter and wife Nicole, Linsdey Carter and husband Joaquin, Steve Carter Jr., Caroline Carter Knight and husband Matt, Carter Soutier and Christian Soutier and four great grandchildren; Logan, Mack and Charlie Carter and Lucca Sebastian.
Charles was a three sport athlete at Greenville High School and MVP in the Shrine Bowl. He was considered by his contemporaries as the greatest athlete to represent the Camperdown Community. He was an All American and All Southern football player. He was coached by James A. “Slick” Moore and Bill Phillips. He was elected MVP by both the football and basketball teams his senior year and received the “Most Athletic” superlative from the Class of 1953. He was inducted in the Greenville High School Wall of Fame in 2016. Remembered as “The Camperdown Comet” Charles also played for the Camperdown Clippers basketball and baseball teams, participating in the textile basketball tournaments before attending Furman University.
Charles owned and ran Carter Excavating Company. He served on the Board of the Salvation Army and served several terms on the Greenville Airport Commission. Charles, along with his wife Barbara, were licensed pilots and enjoyed flying together for many years. There favorite destination was to their Daytona Beach condominium. Charles and Barbara also spent time at their lake house enjoying time with family and their many friends. He attended Pendleton Street Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in the name of Charles Allen Carter Sr.
Visitation will be held January 31, 2018 at 10:00 am at Mackey Mortuary followed by the chapel service at 11:00 am. Graveside service will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park following the chapel service.
