Charlie was raised in Chester, Pennsylvania by a Godly “single mom” and grandmother after his parents divorced when he was five years old. He attended both Presbyterian and Baptist churches while growing up and made a profession of faith in Christ at age eleven.
He attended Delaware Country Christian School from the third grade through high school and went on to earn his B.A. in Behavioral Science from Covenant College and his M.B.A. from the University of Tennessee Chattanooga.
He met Myrna Kaufmann, from Indianapolis, Indiana, at Covenant and they were married the summer of 1964 after Charlie’s graduation. Myrna received her degree in History the following year. They have two married daughters, six grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
After working for several years at IBM in Alabama, and then Exxon in New Jersey, Charlie joined Daniel Construction Company (later Fluor Daniel), where he worked for 29 years in the engineering and construction business. Charlie began working with River Associates to provide management services for lower mid-level market companies in 2002. Over the next several years, Charlie managed a variety of companies in different industries before taking a primary leadership role with the Furmanite Corporation.
Charlie’s enthusiasm and work didn’t end with his professional pursuits. He was deeply passionate about Christian education, serving on the boards of both Shannon Forrest Christian School in Greenville, SC and Covenant College on Lookout Mountain, GA. Every day was an opportunity granted by God to learn about and enjoy His glorious creation, and whether he was working, boating, traveling, or playing with his grandchildren, his life reflected the motto of his alma mater, “In all things Christ Preeminent.”
In 2014, Charlie was diagnosed with ALS, and despite the debilitating nature of the disease, his love for his family, his desire to serve others, and his faith never diminished. He worked hard even up until the last few days of his life to encourage his family and friends through writing and researching Biblical creation. His work focused on challenging secular society’s current views concerning the origins of the universe with primary purpose of bringing glory to God and His handiwork.
By God’s grace, after several days of hearing scripture read aloud, prayers offered up, and hymns being sung to him by his family, Charlie died Christmas morning. In those last precious moments, what we all see as a glimpse of heaven, Charlie now knows firsthand. For he is with our glorious savior Jesus Christ in paradise. To God be all the Glory.
