

He was born on the family farm on January 4, 1939, in Laurel Valley located in Madison County, North Carolina. Clifford was the son of the late Lewis Clifford and Martha Banks Metcalf. He attended Ebbs Chapel Elementary School. He was also a graduate of Mars Hill High School and Berea College in Berea, Kentucky.
In addition to being a former employee of Greer Awning Company, Clifford also worked many years as a licensed realtor.
Clifford is survived by his wife of almost 54 years, Essie Lee Boggs Metcalf, daughter Mary Metcalf Moore (Tom) of Brandenton, Florida and Marc Clifford Metcalf (Ashley) of Greer, South Carolina and four grandchildren: Tommy Moore, Samuel, Lillian “Teddy”, and Charlotte Metcalf. He is also survived by a sister Helen M. Rozier and nephew Eli M. Rozier Jr. (Debbie) and several nieces and nephews by marriage. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Gale B. Metcalf, and a brother-in-law Eli M. Rozier Sr.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive Greenville, SC 2909, with a memorial service to follow at 3:00 PM. Clifford will be laid to rest privately in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
