Dan was born in Detroit, Michigan to Raymond and Loretta O’Heare Dilworth. He married Mary Ellen Anderson in 1956, and together they raised five children. The family moved many times, making homes in Michigan, Ohio, and Texas, as well as London, England. They had been married for 54 years when Mary passed away in 2011.In 2012, Dan married Elfreda Cerniglia in Springfield, Vermont and they divided their time between Vermont and Florida until Elfreda’s death in 2021. Dan moved to Greenville, South Carolina in 2023 to be with family.
Dan graduated from Catholic Central High School in Detroit and went on to earn both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Detroit. He spent his entire 38-year professional career with Chrysler Corporation, starting as an accounting clerk and retiring as a financial executive. However, Dan’s greatest achievement during his tenure at Chrysler was the friendships he made, many of which lasted his lifetime.
Quick-witted and funny, his sense of humor was legendary. He cherished having family and friends gathered around the table, sharing a meal, and telling stories. Dan enjoyed traveling and saw much of the world. Golf was a favorite pastime, and he played well into his 80’s. An avid sports fan, Dan followed the Detroit Tigers and Lions, University of Michigan Wolverines, The Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and most recently, the Clemson Tigers.
After retirement, he spent the winter months in Florida. He loved that period of his life, as he was able to spend time with his brothers, sister, in-laws, cousins, and lifelong friends. The days were filled with golf, shared meals, relaxation and humor.
He is survived by sons, Tim Dilworth (Kim), Paul Dilworth (Polly), and Patrick Dilworth (Heather); daughter, Nancy Collins (Don); grandchildren, Jessica Dilworth (Logan), Ryan Dilworth (Hawley), Anna Gebhardt (Tyler), Emma Dilworth (Anthony), Christopher Dilworth, Cooper Dilworth (Hanna) and Claire Dilworth; and several special nieces, nephews and cousins including Dennis Dilworth and Bob Chaffee (Mary Ann).
