Simpsonville.
Ed was born on July 2nd, 1954 in Johnstown, PA, the son of Donald and Margaret Anderson. He was the second of six children, a brother to Eyvonne, Donna, Jeff, Cindy, and Christel. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown and went on to receive his MD from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia.
It was in Philadelphia that he met Teena Gray, whom he married on June 5, 1980. While Ed was a resident at Latrobe Hospital, the couple welcomed both of their children - Samuel, born in 1981; and Christeena, born in 1982.
Ed served as a doctor in the U.S. Air Force during the 1980s, being stationed in northern New York and Washington D.C., before serving in the Air Force reserves in Colorado Springs, CO. In 1996, he moved with his family to the Upstate, building a house in Simpsonville where he has lived since. He served as a general practitioner and family doctor in both Greenville and Anderson before transitioning to emergency medicine with Greenville Hospital System. He finished his career as an urgent care doctor with MD 360, where he forged friendships with a number of cherished colleagues.
Ed enjoyed an active life, and never tired of exploring. He was an avid biker and pickleball enthusiast, and enjoyed a special bond with fellow members of his pilates class at Five Forks Sports Club. He had a servant’s heart, volunteering for many years at Greenville Free Medical Clinic, supporting Miracle Hill Ministries, and joining hurricane relief missions with Samaritan’s Purse. He was a beloved parishioner at Palmetto Hills Presbyterian Church, where he experienced the deep joy of spiritual community. He loved sports and was consistently in the running for World’s Most Dedicated Pittsburgh Penguins Fanatic. And he was a fun-loving and caring Grandpa, who loved few things more than playing with his grandsons Theodor and Emil.
Ed will be remembered as a loving brother, father, grandfather, husband, and friend - humble, caring, and distinguished by a gentle strength. But he found his deepest identity as a beloved child of God, and his ultimate hope and strength came from his faith in Jesus Christ. Among the words of Jesus that were most significant to him were these, from John 14:6 - “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Day in and day out, Ed sought for these words to shape his life, and desired that others would know God’s love through his witness.
Ed was preceded in death by his daughter Christy, sister Eyvonne, and wife Teena. He is survived by his son Sam, daughter-in-law Susan, and grandsons Theodor and Emil.
A visitation and memorial service will be held at Palmetto Hills Presbyterian Church on Friday, July 1. Visitation will be from 2-3:30pm, and the service will take place at 4pm.
In lieu of gifts or flowers, Ed’s family requests that donations be made in his honor to Miracle Hill Ministries or the Mario Lemieux Foundation.
