Dorcas Barnett Lindsay was born November 9, 1926, to Elvie H. and Frank T. Barnett. She was married to G. Denton Lindsay for seventy-three years before he passed. They lived in Greenville until they moved “out of town” to Easley and the Foothills Presbyterian Retirement Center.
Dorcas and Denton raised three children, the Rev. Beth Lindsay Templeton, G. Denton Lindsay, Jr. (Liliana) and Charles N. Lindsay (Renee). She cherished her five grandchildren, David S. Templeton, III (Heather), Matthew L. Templeton (Ginger), Erin Lindsay Gambrell (Ryan), Lauren Lindsay Cole (Lee), and Kimberlyn Lindsay, and her eight great-grandchildren.
Dorcas was as an active homemaker when her children were young. She used her freezer to put up fresh vegetables every summer. Like her namesake in the Bible, Dorcas, was quite a seamstress. She worked part-time off and on as a secretary, sometime for pay and other times as a volunteer.
Even though Dorcas was reared a Baptist, she joined her husband at First Presbyterian Church where she eventually became the full-time Church Business Administrator. As such she honed her planning and administrative skills to an amazing degree. She became the President of the Presbyterian Church Business Administrators Association on the national level.
Dorcas and Denton were active in Eastern Star in the early years of their marriage. They loved to square dance and to take family on camping vacations. They began touring the world and the United States.
Dorcas was known for her sincere thank you notes and helping out her neighbors. Even in her later years, she was an advocate for people who needed support or someone to speak up for them. She, an avid knitter, made prayer shawls and caps to be given away. She reached out to people who lost a loved one.
As a mother and grandmother, Dorcas was always there. She could keep secrets when needed and tried to offer advice only when asked. That didn’t always work so well. Dorcas relished her role as Mamer to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always had a treat of some sort for them to take with them. The great-grandchildren were very impressed that she kept snacks in her dishwasher in her apartment since she didn’t need it to wash dishes.
Dorcas had a deep and abiding faith. She believed that when she had accomplished what the Lord had intended for her, God would take her home. Her favorite Bible verse, Luke 11:9, says: “Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.” She fully lived into the reality of this promise of Jesus. Her other favorite scripture was Proverbs 3: 5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
Dorcas walked this earth believing in the Lord and loving her family and friends. Her memorial service will be Saturday, January 21, at 2:00 in the chapel of Foothills Presbyterian Retirement Community, 205 Bud Nalley Drive, Easley, SC, 29642. She asked that in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to PCSC (Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina) Foundation, 2817 Ashland Road, Columbia, SC 29210 or the charity of one’s choice.
