Doris Russell Ables, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, at the remarkable age of 100. Born on November 2, 1925, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Doris lived a vibrant century filled with purpose, faith, and deep dedication to those she loved.
For many years, Doris brought her sharp intellect and warm demeanor to her professional life at Church and DeWitt. Beyond her work, her life was anchored by her enduring faith and her active community involvement as a dedicated member of Frances Asbury United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. Doris was known for her bright, outgoing spirit and truly thrived when socializing with friends and family. A natural organizer who loved bringing people together, she took great joy in being in charge of the church kitchen during social gatherings, ensuring everyone was well-fed and warmly welcomed. Whether sharing a quiet conversation or coordinating a church event, she brought joy, wisdom, and a welcoming heart to every room she entered.
Doris leaves behind a rich legacy of love and family. She is lovingly survived by her grandson, Daniel L. Swords, and his wife, Alla I. Swords; her great-grandson, Alex Swords; and her great-granddaughter, Lauren Hankla, and her husband, Chase Hankla. Her spark lives on in her two cherished great-great-granddaughters, Azalee and McKenna Hankla, who brought immense joy to her later years.
Doris is reunited in eternity with her beloved husband, William D. Abels, who preceded her in death in March 2006. She will be profoundly missed by her family, her congregation, and the countless friends whose lives she touched over her extraordinary 100 years.
