She was born on August 3, 1928 in Dallas, TX, the only surviving child of the late Bruce Arthur and Martha Marie (Hill) Granberry. Her father was in the insurance business, and the Granberry family lived in many locations throughout the South during Doris’s childhood – St. Louis, Memphis, Vicksburg, Mobile, Hattiesburg, Chattanooga. She graduated early (age 17) from Taylorsville High School, and attended Judson College (Marion, AL) for two years before transferring to Mississippi College (Collins, MS) in 1947. Doris earned degrees in both Education and Business in 1949, and married her soul mate and life-long partner, Leslie E. “Les” Goodwin in Taylorsville, MS that summer. They spent more than six decades working together and traveling the world.
Wherever Les went, Doris found a job teaching school. In fact, they both taught school for a year after they had graduated from Mississippi College to save up money for Les to attend graduate school. Then they were off to the University of Mississippi, while Les earned his master’s degree in Physics (1950-1951). He taught radar and electronics for a year at Keesler AFB (Biloxi, MS), then they spent a year in Downers Grove, IL, before he was transferred by DuPont to the Savannah River Plant in Aiken, SC. Doris continued teaching when the family moved to Wilmington, DE and several years later to Brevard, NC. Her classes were always beautifully organized and often requested by parents. She retired in 1986 to be able to travel with Les - first back to Wilmington, DE and then on to several years in Ootacamund (Ooty), India.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Marie (Goodwin) Dawson (Terry) of Clermont, GA and son Bruce Goodwin (Dianne) of Canal Winchester, OH; grandchildren, Frederick Willis (Margaret) of Simpsonville, SC; Laura (Willis) Lasseter (Timothy) of Flowery Branch, GA; Sabrina (Dawson) Glenn (Tommy) of Seneca, SC; Timothy Dawson (Ashley) of Peachtree City, GA; Casey Clark and Sarah Mills of Fremont, OH; great-grandchildren, Cody and Cadence Willis; Annie and Charlotte Lasseter; Rebeka, Brandon, and Parker Glen; Ryley, McKinley, and Halley Dawson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Leslie E. Goodwin.
Services will be held on Thursday, October 13th at Mackey Mortuary with visitation starting at 10:00 AM and the Celebration of her life at 11:00 AM in the Chapel.
